After careful reflection and tightening Government advice we are unable to manage the risks appropriately. This has led us regrettably to our decision to close Groombridge Place for the foreseeable future.

It has been a very difficult start to 2020 for everyone and we are sure you are feeling the need for a respite.  After the rain and storms at the start of the year, we are still waiting for some sunshine to dry the grounds and make them safe for the public but then COVID-19 coronavirus came along.

Social Distancing and Mental Wellbeing

We want you to enjoy the great outdoors but more importantly, we want you to enjoy all that Groombridge has to offer, safely.

Our initial inclination was to open the grounds to everyone, free of charge to provide an outlet for all the pent-up energy in children now no longer at school.

As we thought more about it, we recognised that we would need to control access and considered a nominal entrance fee paid through our advance booking system. We thought if we only had a limited number of tickets available each day then visitor numbers could be strictly controlled.

We hoped that this would meet the dual benefits of ‘social distancing’ while supporting your mental wellbeing. A week ago, opening this coming weekend (28th March) seemed feasible.

However, over the last weekend Government’s advice has become stricter.

If we opened, it was always our intention for safety reasons to keep the café and shop closed and not run the canal boat. That still left over 100 acres of Kent forest for children to run around in, while grownups could enjoy the views, flora and fauna. The daffodils, wild garlic and bluebells are stunning.

We knew Groombridge would be a great day in the open air, but we do have 2 ‘pinch points’ which we now feel unable to manage effectively to keep everyone well and secure.

First, there is Crusoe’s World with its wooden pirate ships to climb up and over, round and through. They are always a magnet for young and old children. If not the children, adults trying to catch and contain their children were both a threat to social distancing.

Secondly, there are the giant swings suspended from the top of tall trees. We only have five, they are very popular and sometimes there can be a queue.

After careful reflection and tightening Government advice we are unable to manage the risks appropriately. This has led us regrettably to our decision to close Groombridge Place for the foreseeable future.

Monitoring the Situation

We always put staff and public safety first.  We will keep monitoring the situation closely and follow the latest advice from the UK Government and Public Health England.

As soon as possible, we would like you to join us in the open air so that you and your children can take a deep breath of fresh air without concern.

if any of these organisations change their advice we will react quickly and responsibly and let you know here.
